How to Build a Wishlist App Like GoWish: Features, Cost and Revenue (2027) — Development guide by Make An App Like

Quick answer: GoWish is a Copenhagen-based wishlist app with more than 20 million registered users and more than 800 million saved wishes, and on 5 November 2026 it was the number one Lifestyle app on the US App Store. To build a wishlist app like GoWish you need five things: a wish importer that turns a link from any online store into a clean wish with a title, image and price; wishlists people can share by link, SMS or WhatsApp; secret reservations, so friends can claim a gift without the owner seeing; reminders for birthdays and holidays; and affiliate tracking, which is how the app earns money when someone buys a wish. At Make An App Like we price an iOS and Android MVP at about $30,240 to $61,920 (420 to 860 engineering hours at a $50 blended rate, plus design, QA and contingency), built in 9 to 14 weeks. A full platform with price alerts, Secret Santa, group gifting and a brand dashboard runs about $59,040 to $120,960.

Key takeaways

  • GoWish grew from about 10 million registered users in January 2025 to more than 20 million, and more than 10 million of them are in the US.
  • It makes money from about 65,000 affiliate partnerships and more than 700 direct brand relationships, plus a data product called Wish Signals.
  • The wish importer, which reads any product link from any store, is the hardest and most expensive module, at nearly a fifth of the MVP.
  • Secret reservations are the feature that makes the product work: guests see what is taken, the owner does not.
  • Every shared wishlist is an invitation, so growth comes from sharing rather than ads.
  • Start building now for next year's holidays. US holiday-season retail sales are forecast at about $1 trillion in 2026.

Why wishlist apps are trending right now

We check the live App Store charts before recommending any app to copy, and wishlists stood out this month. On 5 November 2026, five of the top 32 free apps in the US Lifestyle chart were wishlist or gift-exchange apps: GoWish at number one, Giftful at five, Listful at 17, drawnames at 20 and Elfster at 32. The timing is not an accident. The National Retail Federation expects US retail sales for the holiday season, 1 November to 31 December, to grow 4.2 percent to roughly $1 trillion, after 3.1 percent growth to $972 billion in 2025.

GoWish's own numbers show how fast the category can move. Tech.eu reported about 10 million registered users in January 2025, including 3.7 million in the US within a few months of launch there. TheNextWeb reported more than 18 million by July 2026, and GoWish now lists more than 20 million. The business is real but not free money: TheNextWeb reported gross profit of DKK 72.5 million in 2025, while the company swung from a DKK 11 million profit in 2024 to a DKK 6.2 million loss in 2025. A wishlist app is a volume business, and you should plan for that from the start.

How GoWish works

The product is a simple loop, and every part of it is worth copying:

  1. Save. A user spots something they want and taps the GoWish button in the iPhone share menu, or pastes a link into the app and lets it fill in the details. GoWish says wishes can come from any online store in the world, from the big marketplaces in our list of the most popular online marketplaces in the US to small independent shops.
  2. Share. The user sends a list by SMS, WhatsApp, Messenger or email, for a birthday, a wedding, Christmas or any other occasion. Lists can be made together with a partner, or on behalf of family members and friends.
  3. Reserve. Friends open the list, reserve the gift they plan to buy and see what others have taken. The owner does not see reservations and gets no notification, so the surprise survives.
  4. Buy. The gift giver clicks through to the store. That click is where GoWish earns money, through affiliate links and brand partnerships.

The loop also explains the growth. Every shared list puts the app in front of people who have not installed it yet, and many of them make a list of their own for the next occasion.

The wish importer is the hard part

Users expect to paste any link and get a clean wish back. Most product pages describe themselves in their code: the Open Graph protocol defines tags for a page's title and image, and many stores also add product structured data with name, price and currency, which Google documents at developers.google.com. Read those first, fall back to the page's visible content, and let the user fix anything the importer gets wrong. Save a copy of the image, because stores change and delete them. Some retailers block automated requests, so where an affiliate network offers a product feed, use it.

Reservations: the rule that makes or breaks the app

GoWish's help center spells out the rule: the person who made a wishlist cannot see which wishes are reserved and is not notified when one is. There is one honest gap, which GoWish also documents: if the owner opens their own list through the shared link, they see it as a guest would. Copy the rule and design around the gap. Show reserved wishes to guests, blurred and marked, hide them from the owner's own view, never send the owner a reservation notification, and make it easy to release a reservation when plans change.

Sharing is the growth engine

Build the shared list as a fast web page first and an app screen second. Most guests arrive from a text message on a phone that does not have your app, and they should be able to view the list, reserve a gift and click through to buy without signing up. Then ask them to save a wishlist of their own. That is the moment you turn a guest into a user.

What it costs to build an app like GoWish

We price this with the same feature-hour model as our guide to what it costs to make an app: engineering hours per module for an iOS and Android app with a backend, at a $50 per hour blended rate. To size your own version, run your feature list through our app development cost calculator.

MVP moduleHoursCost at $50/hr

Where a wishlist app like GoWish spends its MVP budget, by module Midpoint cost of each MVP module at fifty dollars an hour, before overhead and contingency. The wish importer is the largest at $6,000, about 19 percent of the build. The wish importer is the biggest single line item Midpoint MVP cost per module at $50/hr, before overhead and contingency Wish importer$6,000 Profiles and friends$3,750 Admin and analytics$3,750 Affiliate tracking$3,500 Wishlists$3,000 Inspiration feed$3,000 Share-menu button$2,250 List sharing$2,250 Secret reservations$2,250 Reminders$2,250
Reading any product link from any store is the hard part. Everything else is standard app work.

The wish importer takes nearly a fifth of the MVP on its own, because it has to cope with thousands of differently built store pages. Affiliate tracking is the other module founders underestimate: links have to be converted for each network, clicks counted and sales matched back to wishes, or you will never know which features earn money.

Phase two: the full platform

Phase two moduleHoursCost at $50/hr
Browser extension for Chrome and Safari40 to 80$2,000 to $4,000
Price-drop and back-in-stock alerts60 to 120$3,000 to $6,000

AI gift suggestions40 to 100$2,000 to $5,000
Loaded phase two total400 to 820 hours$28,800 to $59,040

That brings the full platform to about $59,040 to $120,960. Group gifting and the brand dashboard are the largest items: one moves money between friends, which needs a licensed payment provider, and the other is effectively a second product for marketers.

Cost by team location and timeline

The midpoint MVP scope of 640 hours, with the same 44 percent added for design, QA, management and contingency:

RegionApprox hourly rateMidpoint MVP
North America$100 to $150+$92,160 to $138,240+
Western Europe$50 to $100$46,080 to $92,160

Latin America$50 to $85$46,080 to $78,336
South and Southeast Asia$25 to $60$23,040 to $55,296

At about 120 engineering hours a week from a team of three or four, the MVP takes 9 to 14 weeks: three weeks of discovery and design, 4 to 8 weeks of build, and two to three weeks of testing and app store review. Phase two adds 4 to 7 weeks.

How a wishlist app makes money

  • Affiliate commissions. When a guest buys a wish through your link, the store pays a commission. Rates vary by retailer and network, but as an illustration, a $50 gift at a 4 percent commission earns $2. If users save 1,000,000 wishes in a year and 3 percent are bought through your links, that is about $60,000. GoWish runs this at scale, with about 65,000 affiliate partnerships.
  • Brand partnerships. Brands pay for visibility in the app and for campaign packages. GoWish gives partners a dashboard showing wishes, clicks, conversions and sales.
  • Demand data. What people wish for is a signal brands value, and GoWish sells it as Wish Signals. Only ever share it aggregated and with clear consent.
  • A free store plugin. GoWish's Shopify app, free since June 2024, puts its wishlist button on brand websites, which grows the network and the data at the same time.

Wishlists are a quiet form of social commerce: friends drive the buying, and the app takes a share of the sale. Our social commerce app cost guide covers the shopping layer in more depth.

Rules to get right before launch

  • Disclose affiliate links. The US Federal Trade Commission's Endorsement Guides (ftc.gov) expect affiliate relationships to be disclosed clearly, and each affiliate network has its own rules for apps.
  • Protect children's lists. Parents make Christmas lists for kids. If children under 13 could use the app themselves, the FTC's updated COPPA Rule applies; it took effect on 23 June 2025, with full compliance required by 22 April 2026.
  • Keep payments outside in-app purchase. Gifts are physical goods bought in other stores, and Apple's guideline 3.1.3(e) (developer.apple.com) says goods consumed outside the app must use payment methods other than in-app purchase. That means no Apple commission on affiliate sales.
  • Respect store terms. Some retailers forbid automated scraping. Use affiliate product feeds where they exist.

When to launch, and where

A wishlist app has one giant season, November and December, and many small ones: birthdays, weddings, baby showers and graduations. If you start now, you will not catch this Christmas, so aim to launch in the spring, learn from smaller occasions and arrive at next year's holidays with a polished product and a list of brand partners.

There is also a gap worth noticing. GoWish's app supports only Danish and English, and on 6 November 2026 it had just 54 ratings on the UAE App Store. An Arabic and English wishlist app built around Eid, Ramadan and wedding gifting in the Gulf would not be competing head on with GoWish.

Build from scratch or start from a white label base?

We sell a white label LTK clone, a creator commerce platform, so weigh our view accordingly. It already includes wishlists, saves and follows, price-drop and back-in-stock alerts, shoppable posts, affiliate tracking and an admin panel. It costs $16,850 one-time, with full source code optional at $1,999, and most builds go live in 7 to 30 days. What it does not have is a GoWish-style wish importer, share-menu button and secret reservations. Adding those three costs about $10,080 to $20,160 on our model, for a total of about $26,930 to $37,010. If gifting between friends is your whole product, a custom build from the MVP table above is the cleaner route.

Conclusion

A wishlist app like GoWish is one of the more affordable consumer apps to build, about $30,240 to $61,920 for an MVP, because most of it is standard app work. The two parts that decide success are the wish importer, which has to read any link from any store, and secret reservations, which keep the surprise intact. Get those right, make sharing effortless for people who do not have the app, and the product spreads every time someone shares a list.

The revenue side needs patience. Affiliate income is small per gift and arrives in a rush every December, so plan your launch around the calendar and build brand partnerships before you need them.

Frequently Asked Questions

#How much does it cost to build a wishlist app like GoWish?

About $30,240 to $61,920 for an iOS and Android MVP with a wish importer, wishlists, sharing, secret reservations, reminders, affiliate tracking and an admin panel, based on 420 to 860 engineering hours at a $50 blended rate plus 20 percent for design and QA and 20 percent contingency. A full platform with price alerts, Secret Santa, group gifting and a brand dashboard runs about $59,040 to $120,960. Make An App Like's free app cost calculator can size your own version.

#How long does it take to build a wishlist app?

About 9 to 14 weeks for an MVP with a team of three or four: three weeks of discovery and design, 4 to 8 weeks of build at roughly 120 engineering hours a week, and two to three weeks of testing and app store review. Phase two features add another 4 to 7 weeks.

#What is GoWish and how does it work?

GoWish is a free wishlist app and website run by Ønskeskyen ApS in Copenhagen, with more than 20 million registered users and more than 800 million saved wishes. Users save wishes from any online store through the share menu or by pasting a link, share lists by SMS, WhatsApp or email, and friends reserve gifts without the list owner seeing what has been taken. On 5 November 2026 it was the number one Lifestyle app on the US App Store.

#How does GoWish make money?

Mainly from commissions and brand deals. TheNextWeb reported in August 2026 that GoWish has about 65,000 affiliate partnerships and more than 700 direct brand relationships, and a commerce media division that sells Wish Signals, data on what people add to their lists. Brands also get a partner dashboard showing wishes, clicks, conversions and sales. The app is free for users.

#What features does a wishlist app need?

A wish importer that turns any product link into a wish, a share-menu button, wishlists by occasion, sharing by link and messaging apps with a web view for guests, secret gift reservations, reminders, affiliate link tracking and a follow feed for friends and brands. Price-drop alerts, Secret Santa, group gifting, a brand dashboard and a store plugin can come in phase two.

#How do gift reservations work without spoiling the surprise?

Guests can see which wishes are reserved, but the list owner cannot, and the owner gets no notification when a wish is reserved. GoWish documents one exception: if the owner opens their own list through the shared link, they see it as a guest would. A good design hides reservations from the owner's own view, marks reserved wishes clearly for guests and lets people release a reservation easily.

#How does a wishlist app add products from any store?

It reads the information most product pages already publish in their code: Open Graph tags for the title and image, and product structured data for the name, price and currency. When those are missing, the importer falls back to the page's visible content and lets the user correct it. Images should be saved so wishes survive store changes, and affiliate product feeds are a cleaner source where stores block automated requests.

#Does a wishlist app need Apple in-app purchase?

No, not for gifts. Gifts are physical goods bought in other stores, and Apple's guideline 3.1.3(e) says goods and services consumed outside the app must use payment methods other than in-app purchase. That also means Apple takes no cut of affiliate sales. Any digital subscription you sell inside the iOS app would be a different matter.

#When is the best time to launch a wishlist app?

In the spring, so you can learn from smaller occasions such as birthdays, weddings and graduations before the holiday rush. November and December are the big season: the National Retail Federation expects 2026 US holiday-season retail sales of roughly $1 trillion, and five wishlist or gift-exchange apps were in the top 32 of the US Lifestyle chart on 5 November 2026.

#Can I start from a white label app instead of building from scratch?

Yes, if your idea leans toward shoppable wishes. Make An App Like sells a white label LTK clone with wishlists, saves, follows, price-drop alerts and affiliate tracking for $16,850 one-time, with source code optional at $1,999. Adding a GoWish-style wish importer, share-menu button and secret reservations costs about $10,080 to $20,160, for a total of about $26,930 to $37,010.
