BookMyShow Operations and Features: How the Ticketing Platform Works (2026) — Marketplace Apps guide by Make An App Like

Quick answer: BookMyShow is India's largest online entertainment ticketing platform, run by Bigtree Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. It operates as a two-sided marketplace: cinemas, event organisers, and sports bodies list their seats, and fans discover, book, and pay in the app, then enter with an M-ticket, e-ticket, or wristband. It earns money from convenience fees on tickets, its own live events business (BookMyShow Live), and advertising. In FY25 it reported total income of Rs 1,869 crore and a net profit of Rs 192 crore. Its key features include live seat maps, food and drink pre-orders, bank offers, gift cards, virtual queues for big concerts, and partner tools such as the BookMyShow Partner app and branded booking apps for cinemas.

Key takeaways

  • BookMyShow began in 1999 as a software company serving cinemas and launched the BookMyShow brand in 2007. That software heritage still shapes its operations.
  • Online ticketing is the biggest business (Rs 828 crore in FY25), but live events are catching up fast (Rs 756 crore, up 66 percent) through tours and festivals it promotes.
  • Convenience fees drive ticketing revenue, and cinemas get a cut: in FY24 BookMyShow paid cinemas Rs 323 crore, about 43.6 percent of its ticketing revenue.
  • For high-demand events it relies on virtual queues, per-person ticket limits, ID checks, and physical tickets or wristbands to fight touts.
  • Its toughest rival is District, the app Zomato (now Eternal) built on Paytm's ticketing business, which already has over 60 percent of BookMyShow's weekly users.

How BookMyShow works: the booking flow

Every booking on BookMyShow follows the same basic path, whether you're buying two seats for a Friday night film or a ticket to a stadium concert. Here is what happens at each step and what runs behind it.

  1. Discover. You pick a city, then browse movies, events, plays, sports, and activities. The App Store listing promises "personalised recommendations", and trailers, ratings, and reviews help you decide.
  2. Pick seats. For films you choose a cinema and showtime, then pick seats on a live seat map. The seats you select are held while you pay so nobody else can grab them.
  3. Add extras. Many cinemas let you add a food and drinks combo, and you can apply bank offers, gift cards, or vouchers.
  4. Pay. You pay by UPI, card, net banking, or wallet. The convenience fee and its GST appear as separate lines on the bill.
  5. Confirm. BookMyShow writes the booking to the cinema's or organiser's ticketing system, so the counter can't sell the same seat twice.
  6. Get the ticket. You receive an M-ticket or e-ticket in the app. For some big concerts, physical tickets or wristbands are couriered instead.
  7. Enter. Staff scan your QR code at the door. At high-demand concerts they also check a government photo ID.
How a BookMyShow booking flows Six steps: discover a show, pick seats on a live seat map, pay with fees shown separately, confirm the booking in the cinema or organiser system, receive an M-ticket or e-ticket, and get scanned at entry. How BookMyShow operates behind the scenes

Supply: cinemas, organisers, and venues

A ticketing marketplace is only as good as its inventory, and BookMyShow's edge comes from how deeply it plugs into venues. The company started in 1999 by selling software to cinemas, and it still does more than resell seats. On Google Play, Bigtree Entertainment publishes branded booking apps for independent cinemas such as AMB Cinemas, Mayajaal Multiplex, Rohini Complex, Sterling Cineplex, and Regal Cinema, plus a BookMyShow Partner app that partners use to track sales. In other words, it runs the online box office for many single screens and smaller chains, not just its own consumer app.

The money flows in a specific way. A 2026 tax tribunal ruling involving PVR INOX describes the arrangement: BookMyShow passes the cinema the full ticket price plus a fixed Rs 7.25 per ticket from the convenience fee, and keeps the rest of the fee. Across all partners, BookMyShow paid cinemas Rs 323 crore as revenue share in FY24, about 43.6 percent of its ticketing revenue, according to its filings reported by Entrackr.

For events, organisers range from small comedy clubs to global tour promoters. In 2017 BookMyShow took a majority stake in Townscript, a self-serve event ticketing platform, which gave smaller organisers a quick way to sell tickets.

Live events: BookMyShow Live

BookMyShow doesn't only sell other people's events. Through BookMyShow Live it promotes and produces them, which turns it from a commission business into a risk-taking promoter. It co-produces Lollapalooza India, and it organised Coldplay's Music of the Spheres shows in India in January 2025. Pollstar reported 223,570 tickets and $15.7 million in gross sales for the two Ahmedabad shows, and 163,711 tickets and $12.8 million for three Mumbai shows. EY estimated the Ahmedabad concerts alone generated more than Rs 640 crore in economic impact. In 2025 BookMyShow Live also presented Ed Sheeran's India tour with AEG Presents.

Promotion is a high-stakes business. Live events brought in Rs 455 crore in FY24 but posted a segment loss of Rs 138 crore, because artist fees, production, and venues are paid upfront. Revenue then jumped to Rs 756 crore in FY25.

Sports ticketing

Sports is the third pillar. BookMyShow was the official ticketing platform for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. It's also a battleground: for IPL 2026, The Ken reported that BookMyShow ticketed 25 league matches while District handled nearly half of the 70.

Payments, fees, and refunds

The convenience fee is where most ticketing revenue comes from, and it is regulated more than most people think. GST at 18 percent applies to the fee, which is why it shows up as CGST and SGST lines on your bill. In 2025 the Bombay High Court ruled on two separate cases involving Big Tree Entertainment. In July it struck down Maharashtra government orders that had banned convenience fees on online movie tickets. In August it upheld a state rule that treats any online booking fee above Rs 10 per ticket as part of the admission price, which makes that part subject to entertainment duty.

Refunds depend on the partner. Where a cinema or organiser allows cancellation, the option sits on the order summary page, a placement BookMyShow added in a December 2025 app update. Payment processing is a real cost too: BookMyShow spent Rs 49.6 crore on payment gateway charges in FY24.

Trust, safety, and anti-scalping

The Coldplay sale in September 2024 tested every part of the system. Rolling Stone India reported about 13 million logins for the first two Mumbai shows, the site crashed minutes before tickets went live, and both shows sold out within hours. BookMyShow cut the purchase limit from 8 to 4 tickets per person and put buyers in a virtual queue. Tickets then appeared on resale sites at inflated prices, and BookMyShow filed a police complaint naming 27 individuals and the resale site Viagogo. Mumbai's Economic Offences Wing questioned the company during its probe, which closed with no wrongdoing found on BookMyShow's part, according to Pollstar.

For the shows themselves, BookMyShow couriered physical tickets, used wristbands as the ticket with no replacements, and required a government photo ID at entry. These steps are now the playbook for high-demand concerts in India.

Technology and data

BookMyShow handled up to 200 million tickets a year before COVID, according to an AWS blog post co-written by its CTO, Mahesh Vandi Chalil. The same post describes moving a 15-year-old analytics system to AWS in four months with the partner Minfy, using services such as S3, Glue, Athena, Redshift, and SageMaker, and fed by more than 100 Kafka consumers. Storage costs fell 90 percent and analytics and machine learning spend fell 80 percent. Demand data shows the scale this platform supports: BookMyShow's 2025 year-end report counted 6.8 million tickets sold over the Dussehra weekend alone, the busiest period of the year, and more than 34,000 live events.

How BookMyShow makes money

BookMyShow makes money from three main streams: convenience fees on ticket sales, its own live events, and a mix of advertising, food and drinks, vouchers, and software. It has been profitable for three straight years, and profit has risen each year.

Live events are the fastest-growing business at BookMyShow, while online ticketing still earns the most.

The mix is shifting. In FY24 online ticketing made up 57.4 percent of revenue from operations. By FY25 live events were almost as large as ticketing, which raises revenue but also adds risk, since promoters carry the upfront costs. Inc42 reported that BookMyShow expects 25 to 30 percent growth in FY26, and in August 2026 KKR agreed to take a minority stake, reportedly at a valuation of about $850 million after the investment.

District is the real threat because it bundles going out (movies, events, and restaurant bookings) inside one app backed by Zomato's huge user base. BookMyShow's defence is depth: venue software, exclusive live events it promotes itself, and the biggest catalogue.

Challenges BookMyShow still faces

  • Fee pushback: Convenience fees draw regular criticism and court cases, and Maharashtra now applies entertainment duty to fees above Rs 10 per ticket.
  • Event risk: Promoting tours lifts revenue but brought a Rs 138 crore segment loss in FY24.
  • Touts and traffic spikes: Each mega-sale brings crashes, queues, and resale abuse that hurt trust.
  • Competition: District is winning share in both movies and IPL tickets.

Tips for getting the most out of BookMyShow

  • Check cancellation before you pay. Only some cinemas and events allow it, so confirm the option exists if your plans might change.
  • Compare the total, not the ticket price. The convenience fee and its GST are added at checkout, so compare the final amount with the cinema's own app or box office.
  • Stack your offers. Bank offers, gift cards, and the RBL Bank Play card can cut the cost of regular movie nights.
  • For big concerts, join the queue early and buy only from official sellers. Unofficial resale tickets may not get you in, because some events check the buyer's ID at entry.
  • Keep your ID handy. High-demand shows can ask for a government photo ID at the gate.

Lessons for founders building a ticketing platform

If you want to build an app like BookMyShow, its operations offer a practical blueprint.

  • Win supply before demand. BookMyShow started by giving cinemas software they needed, then sold their seats online. Our guide to the marketplace chicken-and-egg problem covers more ways to seed the supply side.
  • Sell from one inventory pool. Sync seats with each venue's system in real time, hold seats during payment, and release them on failure so nothing is double-sold.
  • Design for spikes. A single mega-sale can bring millions of users in minutes, so plan for virtual waiting rooms, rate limits, and autoscaling. Our comparison of Kubernetes and serverless costs helps you pick the right base.
  • Show fees clearly. Regulators and courts watch convenience fees, so show the fee and its tax separately and keep them reasonable.
  • Build tools for partners. Sales dashboards, entry scanning, and branded apps make venues stay.
  • Expand into events carefully. Promotion grows revenue fast but can lose money in a bad season.

Conclusion

BookMyShow works because it controls more of the ticketing chain than its rivals. It writes software for cinemas, sells their seats through a high-traffic app, shares convenience fees with them, and increasingly creates its own demand by promoting concerts and festivals. Its features cover the whole journey, from discovery and seat maps to M-tickets, wristbands, and partner dashboards. The next test is District, which is growing fast with Zomato's reach. For founders, the lesson is clear: win the venues first, build for traffic spikes, and be open about fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

#What is BookMyShow and who owns it?

BookMyShow is India's largest online entertainment ticketing platform for movies, concerts, sports, plays, and activities. It is run by Bigtree Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., founded in 1999 by Ashish Hemrajani, Parikshit Dar, and Rajesh Balpande. Hemrajani is the founder and CEO, and investors include Network18, Accel, Elevation Capital, Stripes Group, TPG, and KKR.

#How does BookMyShow make money?

BookMyShow earns most of its money from convenience fees on online ticket sales (Rs 828 crore in FY25), from its own live events business, BookMyShow Live (Rs 756 crore in FY25), and from advertising, food and drinks, vouchers, and software. It shares part of the convenience fee with cinemas, paying them Rs 323 crore in FY24.

#How does BookMyShow work with cinemas?

BookMyShow sells seats from the same inventory as the cinema box office, so bookings are written to the cinema's ticketing system in real time. The cinema receives the full ticket price plus a share of the convenience fee; a 2026 tax ruling showed PVR INOX gets Rs 7.25 per ticket from the fee. BookMyShow also builds branded booking apps for independent cinemas.

#Why does BookMyShow charge a convenience fee?

The convenience fee pays for the online booking service, payment processing, and the cinema's share. GST at 18 percent applies to the fee. In 2025 the Bombay High Court struck down a Maharashtra ban on these fees, but separately upheld entertainment duty on any online booking fee above Rs 10 per ticket.

#Can I cancel a BookMyShow ticket?

Only if the cinema or event organiser allows it. When cancellation is available, you will find the option on the order summary page in the app, and the refund follows that partner's policy. Many shows and events do not allow cancellation at all.

#How does BookMyShow stop ticket scalping?

For high-demand events it uses virtual queues, limits such as 4 tickets per person for Coldplay, physical tickets or wristbands, and photo ID checks at entry. After the Coldplay sale in 2024 it filed a police complaint against 27 individuals and the resale site Viagogo, and the Mumbai probe found no wrongdoing by BookMyShow.

#Is BookMyShow profitable?

Yes. BookMyShow reported a net profit of Rs 85.1 crore in FY23, Rs 108.6 crore in FY24, and Rs 192 crore in FY25, when total income reached Rs 1,869 crore. It expects 25 to 30 percent revenue growth in FY26.

#What is BookMyShow Live?

BookMyShow Live is the company's live events arm. It promotes, produces, and tickets concerts and festivals, including Lollapalooza India, Coldplay's 2025 India shows, and Ed Sheeran's 2025 India tour with AEG Presents. Live events earned Rs 756 crore in FY25.

#Who are BookMyShow's main competitors?

Its main competitor is District, the app from Eternal (Zomato), built on Paytm's TicketNew and Insider ticketing businesses bought for Rs 2,048 crore in 2024. District reported FY26 revenue above Rs 970 crore and has over 60 percent of BookMyShow's weekly users. Cinema chains such as PVR INOX also sell tickets through their own apps.

#How much does it cost to build an app like BookMyShow?

A basic event ticketing MVP can start around $8,000 using ready components, as our Eventify build guide explains. A BookMyShow-style platform with live seat maps, venue integrations, payments, partner dashboards, and virtual queues usually costs $60,000 to $150,000 or more, depending on scope and team location.
