What You Should Never Do on Instagram

As bloggers, we sometimes get so caught up in “keeping up with the Joneses” that we forget to remember we’re real humans with real issues and imperfections. And honestly, when bloggers show that side of their lives, it has a way greater effect than the ”beach vibes” captions ever will.

I was inspired and decided to read other people’s (who were mainly bloggers) comments. I was shocked, furious, and embarrassed when I saw at least 3 out of 7 comments saying “love it” or “cute dress babe”.

I was so flabbergasted it got me thinking about what you should never do on Instagram…

What you should never do on Instagram. More on that below, but if you want to grow your account, all you need to do is to buy Instagram likes for your content.

What You Should Never Do on Instagram

There are a few common mistakes that marketers make on Instagram, and here are a few that you should avoid at all costs. Everyone’s definition of TMI is different, but here are some common examples:

How to use Instagram effectively?

#1 Not read the caption!

Not reading a person’s caption is the biggest mistake you can make on Instagram.

And I mean it. It shows you’re lazy and inauthentic, none of which are qualities people are attracted to. Reading the caption gives you a chance to make a meaningful connection with the person, shows you care and makes you stand out in a crowd.

Taking an extra 60 seconds out of your day to read an Instagram caption could open up many opportunities for you. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve authentically engaged with bloggers from big to small and gained followers, loyal readers, and tight-knit virtual relationships.

The bloggers who see you genuinely engaging regularly are the ones who are likely to engage back and lend a hand if you need it. Again, I’ve landed interviews and features and had some of my most dire questions answered because I took the time to read the caption.

#2 Like all blogger’s pictures

When you like someone’s picture, it makes them feel good…if in fact, you truly like it. Liking every blogger’s picture in hopes they’ll like yours back or follow you is crap. It’s not real!

Things to never do on Instagram used to get so excited when I saw a blogger I admired liking my pictures – until I realized why they were doing it. That’s not to say all bloggers do this, and some may genuinely like your pictures, but Instagram is a game for the most part.

Just because someone likes your picture doesn’t mean you have to like theirs back and vice versa. Please don’t like someone’s Instagram picture if you don’t like it. I stopped liking people’s pictures for that reason, now I’m very particular with whose pictures I like, so if I like your picture, it’s a good sign!

#3 Comment randomly

Commenting randomly goes right along with not reading the caption. I had one brand continue to comment the same thing on almost all of my pictures  – “Cool look, check us out if you want!”. I eventually had to privately message this brand, and it hasn’t been a problem since.

I’ve heard some apps and companies can have your Instagram automate comments on other people’s pictures? (Is this true? Please let me know!) If so, that’s crazy and completely takes away from what Instagram is supposed to be used for.

If you’re going to comment on someone’s Instagram, say something that pertains to the actual picture instead of “So cute babe!”. What’s “so cute” about the outfit? We want to know! The more specific, the better in my opinion.

Here are the things you should avoid doing on Instagram

Avoid doing many things on Instagram, especially when marketing your business or personal brand. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is trying to be all things to all people, and this is a surefire way to reach no one. Instead, research your ideal client and create content with them in mind. Your content should educate, entertain, and solve a problem. Lastly, do not follow every account you come across, or else you will end up with no followers.

It’s a good idea to keep your username short and simple, but don’t use it as a username. This practice can damage your brand reputation and annoy current followers. If you can’t be bothered to create a more cryptic name, consider using a nickname that describes the product you’re selling.

You’ll get more followers that way, and they’ll trust you more.

What should you never post on Instagram?

While the world of social media is a wild, creative place, there are some rules about what you should not post on Instagram. Some posts make you seem conceited, while others make you look boring. To avoid these pitfalls, take the time to read the guidelines and follow them accordingly. These guidelines aren’t designed to limit your freedom of expression but enforce proper etiquette.

For starters, don’t post photos of your home. If you don’t live in that house, you invite burglars to break in. This isn’t the best idea to post on social media – your followers don’t want to know that you’re living the high life. Instead, take some time to think before you post anything that will make someone suspicious. After all, your photos and videos could end up on a thief’s profile.

What are some dangers of Instagram?

The popularity of social networks like Instagram has been accompanied by several dangerous consequences. Among these is the possibility of cyberbullying, which is a widespread issue today. Since users have complete control over what they post, some people resort to bullying others. This can be humiliating, and the constant flow of negative comments can worsen mental health problems.

Instagram has also been linked to self-harm, depression, and even suicide.

Using Instagram requires you to share certain types of information. If you post photos with sensitive information, you risk someone stealing your identity and using it for malicious purposes. Fortunately, Instagram has a mechanism for reporting fake accounts and allowing users to block them. However, you should still be cautious when posting sensitive information on Instagram, such as your phone number and address. This can lead to unwanted harassment and even physical harm.

Most Common Instagram Mistakes Marketers Must Avoid

  1. Don’t use an awkward username on Instagram
  2. Don’t set your profile to private
  3. Don’t be a lurker
  4. Don’t post without a caption
  5. Don’t auto-share every Instagram post to Facebook and Twitter
  6. Don’t follow everyone that follows you
  7. Don’t follow someone only to unfollow them later to grow your fan base
  8. Don’t buy Instagram followers
  9. Don’t overuse or misuse hashtags
  10. Don’t ignore your followers’ comments
  11. Don’t steal other Instagram users’ content
  12. Don’t use images from Google searches
  13. Don’t overdo the selfies
  14. Don’t crowd your posts back-to-back

Despite its booming popularity, Instagram marketing is not without its pitfalls. While the platform is fast-growing, marketers are still learning how to capitalize on its cool factor. This image-based social platform differs dramatically from other popular social media sites like Facebook, so marketers often miss out on reaching Instagrammers. Here are some mistakes to avoid. You can use the information above to create a more effective Instagram marketing strategy.

Don’t forget to track analytics. It’s vital to know your audience’s preferences, and analyzing growth and engagement can help you make the right decisions for your business. For example, if you’re focusing on the growth of your Instagram following, you need to monitor your analytics to know whether your content is generating enough engagement. Otherwise, your posts will be buried in a sea of mediocre content.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Instagram

Despite being a fast-growing social media platform with over a billion users, Instagram requires consistency in posting and interaction. While posts should be interesting and build a community, they should also demonstrate your brand identity. Without actionable insights, social media is a waste of time. With Instagram, consistency is even more important due to the platform’s social nature. This is especially true for business owners who have limited time and resources to invest in marketing strategies.

Posting images and videos that have low quality is not a good idea. While using a colorful border with every picture might seem tempting, it will dilute the message and confuse the audience. In addition, avoid tagging random accounts repeatedly. Instead, focus on one or two images with a caption. Finally, avoid tagging random accounts and uploading multiple photos in a day.

What posts are not allowed on Instagram in 2023?

According to the Instagram Community Guidelines, nudity is not permitted on the platform. Breastfeeding images, post-mastectomy scarring, nude paintings, and sculptures, on the other hand, are permissible. The use of graphic violence in images and videos that encourage self-injury, including eating disorders, is prohibited.
