Winning ways have long been a key mechanic in online slots. Players certainly have their preferences now, but it used to be a case of the more the merrier, for the most part. Standard one- and three-payline slots evolved into ten-payline games. Online, with three rows and five reels becoming the standard, 243-ways became big, and then 1024-ways. Now, one of the most prominent advertisements for payline counts is Megaways.

Megaways is a licensed mechanic from Big Time Gaming, offering every possible payline from left to right across the many different symbol sizes. Usually with six reels, it can make for over 100,000 winning ways on one spin. Now, Red Tiger looks to muscle its way into the payline mechanics game with EveryWay. Arriving with a new slot game, EveryWay will certainly appeal to those who don’t want to be tied to set win lines.

How does the EveryWay online slot mechanic work?

The EveryWay mechanic has officially landed among Paddy Power’s online slots in the form of Viking’s Legacy EveryWay™ from Red Tiger. It’s a grid slot in form with high-volatility gameplay. The EveryWay feature works differently from the usual payline setup and from most winning mechanics used by other grid-based slots, like Gargantoonz.

The new base game mechanic introduced with Viking’s Legacy makes it so that you just need the same symbol anywhere to get a win. With EveryWay, you need eight or more matching symbols dotted anywhere, regardless of being on adjoining reels or along a set payline that runs from reel one to reel six. Where the symbols land also matters. Landing winning symbols across six reels rather than all on two reels increases the win size.

Also playing into the EveryWay mechanic is the cascading wins. Get a win of eight matching symbols and the symbols will vanish to make way for more to cascade down onto the reels. This chain reaction can be retriggered indefinitely, and as more cascading wins hit, more features will activate along the board atop the reels. Unlike in Megaways games, though, the base game symbols always land as the same size.

A Viking theme to take EveryWay to the big time

Viking’s Legacy EveryWay™ runs four rows and six reels, offering players 24 places to land their symbols in the base game. Still, players don’t know this until they click on the tile, and to encourage that, Red Tiger opted to headline Viking’s Legacy with its own shieldmaiden. Having featured heavily in the Vikings TV show, it’s tough not to see the headline character of Viking’s Legacy EveryWay as Lagertha, Ragnar’s skilled warrior wife.

Norse mythology and the Vikings remain a hugely popular theme across entertainment. In slot gaming, there’s a whole stack of Viking, Thor, Odin, Valkyrie, Loki, and similarly-themed titles that consistently rank highly among players. Helping to keep this going is Netflix’s heavily used app and its access to the top-class series Vikings: Valhalla and The Last Kingdom.

The EveryWay mechanic, working like a constant scatter pays feature, could be a game-changer, similarly to how Megaways swept the scene. So far, it’s making its biggest impact with this popularly-themed slot, Viking’s Legacy, but it’ll likely continue to be a mainstay in the new releases from Red Tiger.
