iPhone 13 in Australia

The iPhone 13 line-up is Apple’s current flagship phone, unveiled back on September 14th, 2021. And like all newly released flagships, regardless of the brand, this range promised new features, including a palette of fresh colors, a mega increase in storage size, improved battery life, and more. But that does necessarily mean it’s worth your penny? Frankly speaking, we hardly get to see any extreme innovations with new phone releases these days. That doesn’t make them any less alluring. For some people, upgrading to a flagship is simply a matter of they love their gadgets. Others, however, wish to earn the right to “humbly brag” or just brag altogether. This still begs the question – should you buy the new iPhone 13 or wait till September for the possible release of the iPhone 14 range (if the latest flagships are what you are into? Here are a few things you need to know about the iPhone 13 range.

Design

As for design, the iPhone 13 range does boast a few subtle differences from its predecessors. For one, the rear camera is now arranged diagonally instead of vertically. The notch is also a bit smaller, resulting in a more immersive screen. Other than these differences, you are unlikely to notice the rest. They feature the same squared-off edges as their predecessors rather than the rounded finish of previous iterations.

The front and rear are both made of glass. However, only the front panel boasts Apple’s patented Ceramic Shield Technology; hence the phones have great drop resistance. Still, on the matter of durability, the iPhone 13 range is rated for IP68 dust and water resistance. That means it can survive up to six meters underwater for up to 30 minutes. All four versions of the iPhone 13 are thicker and heavier compared to their predecessors.

We love the color options. For the iPhone 13 mini and standard iPhone 13, you can purchase them in blue, green, starlight, product red, pink, and midnight black finishes. The Pro models come in five colors; silver, graphite, gold, sierra blue, and the recently launched alpine green. Regardless of the color you choose, your iPhone 13 is guaranteed to look sleek and classy.

Display

Display sizes differ across the range. The iPhone 13 mini, as you might have guessed, is the smallest of the bunch. It features a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display. The base iPhone 13 has a slightly bigger display, sporting a 6.1 Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion. Both phones might not boast the 120Hz refresh rate of the Pro models. But the screens are still stellar OLED panels and can hold their own against other smartphones in direct sunlight. The iPhone 13 Pro has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display (just like the standard iPhone 13), while the iPhone 13 Max has a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display. If you love big screens, you will love the iPhone 13, Max. We won’t blame you. There’s nothing better than consuming media on a large display. Besides, animations and scrolling look smoother, and gaming is more immersive thanks to their higher refresh rate.

Performance and Battery

The iPhone 13 range runs on the same chipset – Apple’s A15 Bionic chip. That means you can expect the same performance across the range. Well, the amount of allocated Ram may result in a bit of difference. So will the number of GPU chips you get. The A15 chip on the standard models is a 4-core GPU chip, while the Pro variants have an additional GPU chip. Regardless, Apple praises the chip as having a 50% faster CPU and 30% faster GPU than the leading competing chip. This is quite an obscure measure without naming and shaming. One thing you can be sure of is that the phoned on the iPhone 13 range have excellent speeds.

Battery life isn’t bad either. Of course, the Pro models offer better battery life. But all the phones in the range now come with bigger batteries compared to their iPhone 12 counterparts. Down to the specifics, the iPhone 13 Pro Max promises 28 hours of video playback, the iPhone 13 Pro has 22 hours of playback, the iPhone 13 has 19 hours of playback, while the iPhone 13 min could deliver 17 hours of video playback. The iPhone 13 range is capable of MagSafe wireless charging at 15W and Qi magnetic fast wireless charging at 7.5W. These are the same specifications as on the iPhone 12 family.

We get 5G connectivity on the entire iPhone 13 family. However, 5G infrastructure is still growing, and here in Australia, the models feature sub-6 connectivity rather than mmWave as in the US.

Camera

Apple certainly didn’t cut corners when it came to camera quality. However, mobile photography fanatics are likely to lean towards the Pro models, especially the Pro Max. So what exactly do they offer? The Pro models offer three 12MP shooters at the back: wide, telephoto, and ultra-wide lenses. In comparison, the standard iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have a dual 12MP camera setup (wide and ultra-wide lenses). This places them in a weaker position in terms of overall camera technology, especially given their premium price tag. But that doesn’t mean that they deliver pathetic photos.

All the phones take bright and colorful images, giving Samsung phones a run for their money. The primary lens now comes with Apple’s Sensor-Shift OIS technology, a feature that was exclusively on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This results in excellent image stabilization performance; hence your shots will be incredibly sharp even when you are unable to keep the phone perfectly still. In addition, the iPhone 13 range comes with Cinematic mode, a fancy new feature that allows for images with an amazing sense of depth. The Pro models offer some additional camera tricks such as ProRA, macro photography support for more detailed and crisp photos, Night mode support, and more.

Verdict

If you already have an iPhone 12 and it still works, stick with it. The iPhone 13 range, while it does come with some upgrades such as bigger batteries, lots of power, as well as tweaks to the cameras themselves, and a range of software updates, the phones somewhat feel like an iteration of their predecessor. However, if you feel like you are missing out on a feature and don’t mind spending a few hundred dollars on an iPhone 13, go ahead – a day out phone shopping should prove delightful.
